Paw's Up: The Sceniest Resort in Montana

March 25, 2020 by Kristen Grauer in Fall Weekend

After attending a wedding in Montana, I decided to spend a few days at Paw’s Up resort to get a taste of the old west. While I did pause a moment at the staggering prices, I definitely underestimated the level of “scene” I was getting myself into.

On my first trail ride, I learned that Justin Beiber and Hailey had recently inhabited my room, as Hailey had been visiting for a photo shoot. Day 2’s 9AM cattle drive was delayed for two hours because a prominent Russian guest who wanted to attend was still enjoying his breakfast. And finally, at the weekly resort BBQ, I casually chatted with a fellow guest about the time his modest little record label signed Maroon Five.

In conclusion, bring your best pair of Levi’s because this is the perfect place to see and be seen while riding horses or fly fishing. But don’t worry if you forget to swap numbers with any fellow guests…..you’ll see them all next summer in The Hamptons. Happy trails!

Carefree in Carmel

March 24, 2020 by Kristen Grauer in Fall Weekend, Spring Weekend, Summer Weekend

Carmel is an ideal long weekend destination for basically any season. Your base will be the picturesque town of Carmel, where you can stroll charming streets, stepping into tasting rooms to sample local wines, and taking in spectacular sunsets from Carmel Beach. The standout dinner in town is La Bicyclette Restaurant (also apparently loved by Reese Witherspoon!).

Just a stone’s throw from the town of Carmel is so much amazingness to be explored. Drive inland to the mountains of Carmel Valley where you can visit charming wineries, or conquer the scenic 17 Mile Drive, stopping for lunch at The Bench, a casual-chic restaurant overlooking the 16th hole of Pebble Beach Golf Club.

For active types, the Garland Regional Park is a hiker’s paradise, and pet owners will be excited to know that dogs are allowed off-leash throughout the park!

If you have enough days (or if you’re visiting with children), wander into Monterey and check out the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Before you head out, make sure to do Sunday brunch at Mission Ranch! It’s an all-you-can-eat buffet with live music. Snag a seat outside so you can watch the sheep grazing as you feast.

Stay: L’Auberge Carmel

Wineries: Cowgirl Winery; Georis Winery; Holman Ranch

Do: 17 Mile Drive; Earthbound Farm’s Farm Stand; Garland Ranch Regional Park; Bixby Creek Bridge; Monterey Bay Aquarium

Eat: The Bench; Mission Ranch; Aubergine at L’Auberge Carmel; La Bicyclette Restaurant; Casanova

Fall Into Paris

March 23, 2020 by Kristen Grauer in Fall Weekend

Fall is an unexpectedly perfect time to visit the City of Lights - the weather is still warm enough to stroll the streets comfortably, but the crisp, cool air makes those Parisian bars and cafes feel even cozier.

Stay at Le Bristol for the most romantic, authentic Parisian experience. Eat a leisurely and luxurious breakfast in their formal dining room, savoring the perfect croissant before your day of art museums and cafes.

Day 1 calls for a trip to the Louve, followed by lunch at the ever-so-chic Loulou (reservation required). If you can arrive a bit early to the Louvre, grab a coffee at Le Cafe Marly with spectacular views of the Louvre pyramid.

Day 2, visit the Picasso, Rodin Museum, or Musee Yves Saint Laurent Paris, all absolutely marvelous, followed by an al fresco lunch at the iconic Cafe de Flore. Prepare to see and be seen!

For dinner, treat yourself to the ever-so-decadent comfort food at Ferdi, or take in spectacular Eifle Tower views from Monsier Bleu. Another unmissable dinner is the classic Le Relais de L’Entrecote, where your waiter will make sure your plate never runs out of steak frites.

Follow dinner with soufle at hidden gem Le Recamier. If you’ve still got energy, head to the Ritz bar for a nightcap and some live piano music, or La Palette for a super-authentic outdoor cafe vibe, where you are sure to be chatted up by your neighbors over wine.

Stay: Le Bristol; Le Reserve Paris

Eat: Ferdi; Le Recamier; Girafe Restaurant; Le Prince Racine; Le Relais de L’Entrecote; Monsieur Bleu

Do: Picasso Museum; Rodin Museum; Musee Yves Saint Laurent Paris; Louvre; Louis Vuitton Foundation

Shop: Paris Flea; Le Bon Marche; Merci

Late-night: Ritz Bar; La Palette

Weekend in the Berkshires

March 23, 2020 by Kristen Grauer in Fall Weekend

Looking for a weekend of apple picking and cozy meals, with a twist of luxury? The Berkshires just might be your perfect fall destination. You’ll stroll through apple orchards with a cup of cider and stock up on apple cider donuts before heading to grand, old-world hotels for a chic lunch with champagne and glorious views. The Prairie Whale is THE place to grab a cozy dinner in town - be prepared for a long wait but they have amazing cocktails and lawn games to help pass the time.

Grab brunch at The White Hart (or a quick coffee at their adorable take-out Provisions) and experience a tea flight at Harney & Sons Flagship in Salsbury before hitting the road!

Singapore: Where the Past and Future Collide

November 23, 2015 by Kristen in Winter Weekend, Spring Weekend, Fall Weekend, Summer Weekend

Singapore is where old meets new.  You'll find man-made parks atop sky-scrapers, indoor rain-forests and eerily clean city streets.  But you'll also find colorful, 19th century shophouses, bustling hawker centers, and neighborhoods like Little India and Chinatown, where tradition and the past still dominate.

Singapore is a city of opposites, a clashing of ideals and a confusion of norms.  A weekend there is fascinating, if a bit disorienting.  If you've got two full days, I say dedicate one to the future and one to the past.  You'll leave with a little bit of each, and maybe feel a bit more centered in your present.

Day 1: The Future

Orient yourself with a river cruise through the Singapore River, including the Boat Quay, the Clarke Quay and Marina Bay, where you'll spot the city's iconic Merlion.  Afterwards, head to the Gardens by the Bay, a vast expanse of cultivated gardens on reclaimed land by the bay.  Stroll through the gardens and admire the 50-meter tall concrete "supertrees," covered in tropical flowers (which are also quite a vision by night).

Escape the humidity by stepping into the Cloud Forest, an indoor tropical rainforest and then the Flower Dome, the largest greenhouse in the world.  Have lunch inside the Flower Dome at Pollen, a Mediterranean restaurant by chef Jason Atherton, who uses vegetables and herbs grown in the Flower Dome for his dishes.

After lunch, explore the Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Watch the sunset 57 stories high, at Flight Bar & Lounge and eat dinner on the same floor, at Sky at 57.   Head out after dinner at Ce La Vi (previously Ku De Ta) and dance the night away on top of the world (literally).

If you have kids (or even if you don't), an alternative plan is to drive about a half hour from central Singapore (or take the Singapore Cable car, from Mount Faber) to Sentosa, a futuristic island resort, visited by around twenty million people a year.  In Sentosa, check out Asia's tallest freestanding tower, the Tiger Sky Tower (formerly the Carlsberg Tower), Underwater World and the Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom.

Day 2: The Past

Head to Little India and get a dosa for breakfast at Komala Vilas, where you'll feel like you're deep in South India.  Check out the Indian Temple, the Abdul Gaffoor Mosque, and stroll through the shopfronts.  Try Gulab Jamun (a spoungy milky ball soaked in rose-scented syrup) from a street vendor and get henna on your hands, just to make sure everyone knows you're a tourist.

For lunch, head to the Lau Pa Sat hawker center for some traditional Singaporean cuisine, then walk (about ten minutes or so) to Chinatown.  Check out the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, buy some Chinese sweets at Tong Hen, and get reflexology at Bath Culture Foot Therapy.

Have dinner at Red Star Dim Sum, perhaps the most authentic dim sum in Singapore, and then hop into an Uber to the Arab Quarter, known for its colorful, narrow streets and the Sultan Mosque.  Head to Nabins for drinks, hooka and belly-dancing, and end the night a few doors down at Blue Jaz Cafe, with some of the best live music in Singapore.
